        The letter "X" was used on commercial, farm and government  vehicles until 1959.

The County codes are used on state senator, county officer, mayor plates and courtesy plates.
Courtsey plates are issued to "high-profile" citizens of the county and can only be requested by a government official
*= The letter "D" is for DEALER used on cars owned by car dealerships
#= The letter "O" is for OMNIBUS used on Buses, Limos  and Taxis
^= The letters "QQ" are for HISTORICAL used on vehicles over 25 years old and can be stacked for courtesy and vanity  plates
+= The letter "X" is COMMERCIAL or FARMER

These  letters are stacked followed by a number starting at 1000. When the numbers run out they go to from 100A-999Z and then 10AA-99ZZ.
Reverse  number formats are also used, i.e 6748 MC might be on a Meadowlands Plate. Vanity and courtesy plates don't have the stacked prefixes/suffixes
*=The renewal fees for these plates go torwards various orginizations in NJ.
+= S1 is used for school buses with 16 or more passengers.
^= S2 is used for school buses with 16 or less passengers.
